Construct and present a PowerPoint to the class that discusses your research topic.
Step 1:
Explain your topic selection, how it is sociological, why you chose it.
Discuss how it applies to the sociology of family.
Step 2:
Provide an overview of the historical family you studied in your Family Case Study.
Be sure to include sociological insights, such as their structure, cultural context, and significant challenges.
Step 3:
Explain what social issue faces families that relates to the Family Case study and the topic you selected.
Connect the historical family to the Policy Proposal or Non-Profit for Family Support you constructed for Writing Assignment 2.
Step 4:
Discuss how the previous assessments led you to select the family you observed for your ethnographic Family Research Project.
Explain the family structure, and explain the family sociologically: culture, race, ethnicity, gender dynamics/identities, sexual orientations, education level, social class orientation, etc.,
Analyze how these intersect to affect the social issues they face—and how they confront them—as a family.
Tips for Success:
Be Clear and Concise: Focus on the most critical aspects of your research and analyses.
Use Visuals Effectively: Your slides should complement your speaking, not overwhelm with text.
Engage Your Audience: I know it’s hard when you are recording to an empty room, but remember your peers who you have gotten to know over video over the last few weeks. Speak directly to them, as they will be watching and asking questions.
Be sure to make connections between your work and our course content and concepts so your peers have clear ways to engage with your research.
A rule of thumb is: Start off as if you are explaining things so simply a child can understand it. Next, speak as if you are explaining it to your mother or a family member. The last points you make should be high level, meaning only other people in this course would understand the theory and topics.
