A scenario critique essay for Bioethics
(Essay Topic needs to be formulated as well).
Scenario: You are working at a large biosciences research institute, which uses as part of its research rabbit and mice model systems. Your good friend is a member of a moderate animal rights group. Your friend is a decent person whose heart is in the right place. You have known them for years and they have never done anything wrong that you are aware of. Your friend has asked you if you could give them access to the institute’s animal house so they could take a few photos. They assure you they will keep the location secret and only want the photos for a talk they are giving at their next animal rights meeting. Discuss your thoughts on the ethics of how you might respond to this request.
Guide to the task:
– To address your individual grasp of bioethics, a ‘real-world’ ethical scenario will be assigned for you to write a 1,000 word essay. Imagine that you are a practicing bioscientist faced with the scenario; how would you deal with it or what is your analysis of it? Although a more personal approach is possible, the emphasis is still on an academic treatment that involves considering and evaluating the balance of possibilities and justifying your approach. The mere opinion is not sufficient. Supporting your argument with appropriate references is also expected.
– The exercise is intended to be a formative assessment, to help you put your growing ethical understandings to work and as practice on how to formulate an argument systematically.
– Make argumentative points supporting the thesis curated from the scenario.
– Consider the stakeholders and ethical matrix but more in the Bioscience aspect rather than the social and political aspect.
